This family home is located on a 420m2 sloping site in St Lucia, Queensland, with an access easement along the side of the block. The client’s brief was to minimise the house's footprint without compromising interior space while designing for a solid connection to the outdoors.

An emphasis on sustainability reorientated the roof plans and overall use of glass, with a void and green areas integrated throughout the home. Concrete and timber floors, aluminium windows and the use of timber detailing feature throughout this contemporary home, with functionality at its core.

“I loved working with Laar Design. The entire process was enjoyable, creative and deeply affirming, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. Leticia took the time to truly understand my vision, priorities and aesthetic, and she delivered on them with confidence and care.

What stood out most was her ability to problem solve and balance competing requirements. Working with a small block, a limited budget and ambitious ideas, she consistently found smart, considered solutions that never compromised the integrity of the design. Her architectural expertise, combined with a strong interior design sensibility, meant the home works beautifully inside and out. I honestly would have been lost without her guidance.

The finished home is perfectly suited to the Queensland climate and the way we live. Despite the small site, we were able to include everything on our wish list, including multiple bedrooms, a shared office, generous living spaces, a butler’s pantry, covered outdoor entertaining, a pool, gardens and even a built in fish tank. The design brings light and nature into the home, which has had a huge impact on how we live day to day.

I would highly recommend Leticia and Laar Design to anyone looking to build or renovate. Her commitment to understanding her clients, her problem solving ability and her design aesthetic make her an invaluable partner in creating a truly considered home.”
